Pop the Champagne

Sun and Jupiter in Leo is cause for celebration, says astrologer Daniel Sowelu

Normally, when the Sun enters a sign just as the benevolent Jupiter goes into the same, there is cause for celebration. Sun/Jupiter conjunctions are truly great things, a solar expansion of optimism, growth, grace and largesse, enlarging, stretching and inflating the energies of the sign. This one in Leo, at the core of the month's chart, has all those qualities and the passionate extrovert Lion within each of us gets a blast for the next 12 months. Sound the trumpets and pop the champagne!

Indeed, Jupiter sits between the Sun and Mercury, still in late Cancer, while squaring Mars and Vesta in Scorpio, giving each a dose of welcome expansion and opening. One of the dangers, though, is that Jupiter can also push an energy or part of self into overblown hubris, ego-inflation, exaggerated expectations and ungrounded optimism - territory not unfamiliar to Leo, which can set up some form of crash, Icarus flying too close to the Sun-style.

This pursuit of the light has a corresponding dark passage, though, as the Sun also has a wide conjunction to the Black Moon in Leo. It tightens with each day, going exact on the 9th, a powerful meeting with the deep sacred feminine, with the dark mother whose forms include the Black Madonna,
Durga and Black Tara.

For those whose lives are embedded in the status quo, this will be a dangerous time, as such a meeting calls for a surrender, a letting go of the old and for facing deeper, often threatening, truths about oneself or one's world. For the conscious seeker, this is an equally powerful gift, an opportunity to crack ancient destructive patterns, for real transformation and a more potent experience of grace drawn from the sacred feminine.

At the very least, the days around the 9th will be intense as the forces for liberating change and for resistance are equally strong; Uranus in Aries trines the Black Moon, while Saturn in Scorpio squares her and all get activated by the Sun, who fortunately will still be in the comet-like trail of Jupiter. A perfect storm of dark and light grace, and a brilliant alchemical mix for deep and expansive inner work!

This dark and light combination is also reflected in Mercury being conjunct both Medusa and Jupiter, another calling to consciously open and own the deep feminine and bring her light into union with that of the masculine Jupiter.

Alongside this more dramatic equation, there is much to enjoy in this month's relationship dynamics. The lovely Venus is in mid Cancer in a grand trine with the Shiva/Saturn conjunction and with Chiron, the Wounded
Healer in Pisces - a twin process of grounding and healing her connections with the sacred masculine.

Chiron in Pisces has a particular emphasis on recovering deeper layers of sensitivity, in turn enhancing our capacity for ever-deepening intimacy, while Saturn serves to stabilise, steady and anchor our relating and healing processes. It doesn't hurt to have the god of tantra around either!

Venus also has a more challenging square to Uranus in Aries. This stirs the pot between the urge for deep connection, especially in Cancer, and the need to retain and, for some, to reclaim, one's individual autonomy and freedom. Having just come out of a heavy opposition from Pluto in the last weeks of July, this current challenge will simultaneously feel like moving into a greater space to breathe and explore new inner states created by recent healing and transformative experiences.

Juno, the goddess of marriage, is still conjunct the healing goddess Hygeia. In itself, this is a very tantric combination of the powerful, erotic feminine and one that continues the healing and restoration of the real meaning and purpose of any committed relationships, as well as the initiatory quality of any ceremony that binds two people together. This combination is one of those that allows any quality sexual experience to act as a catalyst for spontaneous healing eruptions and for ecstatic openings to the sacred within.

Mars has finally left Libra, after an unparalleled eight months in the sign, a passage that usually only takes 6-8 weeks! The sign and the planet are a bit of a contradiction as the fiery independence of the planet runs against the grain of the sign's relationship emphasis, and its intellectuality.

During this 8 month transit it has set off a ferocious grand cross with Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter in April; again in the T-square in June with Uranus and Pluto and, surprisingly, spent months travelling with the goddess collective of Ceres, Vesta and Hekate close to the North Node.

This multi-dimensional conjunction highlights a synchronising of the medicine woman/earth mother/priestess/warrior archetypes, a kind of sacred marriage between the goddess and the Mars warrior that has enormous potential for inspired, heartful and potent expression of surgical spirituals. As each sits close or on the North Node of the Moon, this is a vision of our future already seeded in the unconscious, the tip of which is showing itself for the first time this year, synchronistic ally with the highly unusual actions of Mars.

With Mars around, it's time to act on that vision or at least to prepare the ground for its eventual manifestation.
