Heart Action

American Indigenous Elders call for action governed by the heart. Jeremy Ball shares their message.

We are alive in astonishing times, times of great destruction and times of great progress. We are living at the point of an evolutionary crux. The soup of human consciousness is mired with such greed and destructiveness that we are faced with three broad bands of response; pretend it's not happening and carry on (insert your favourite brand of avoidance behaviour … watching Fox sports / shopping / working too hard / attending workshops … the list goes on); don't give a damn and join the Mongols in their plunder; or finally, feel concern, read about it, isolate yourself from those causing the destruction but don't do a damn thing about it.

Right now at Fukushima Japan, 1,500 rods, each 14,000 times more radioactive than the 1945 Hiroshima bomb, are being removed so the severely damaged nuclear power plant can be resurrected. I would have thought Japan, of all places, having been bombed to bits by nuclear weapons then facing the recent disaster of a nuclear power plant crippled after a massive earthquake and tsunami, would just cover the power plant with as much concrete as they can muster and revert to a far safer form of energy. But no, they are attempting a highly dangerous manoeuvre in an attempt to resurrect this power plant. The madness is beyond belief - we are talking radioactivity vastly greater than the nuclear bombs that obliterated two entire cities and crippled the nation.

In response to this and all the other incredibly stupid and irresponsible actions undertaken by corporations and governments the world over, a council of American Indigenous Elders gathered in September 2013 for several days in deep prayer around the sacred fire. The result of this was condensed into a beautiful and succinct letter and call to the world, which you can read in its entirety here: www.indigenousaction.org/indigenous-elders-and-medicine-peoples-council-statement-on-fukushima/

Let me charge your heart with an excerpt now, before you do breathe in and connect with what is sacred in you for these words are spoken direct through the elders from The Mother herself:

"This statement reflects the wisdom of the Spiritual People of the Earth, of North and South America, working in unity to restore peace, harmony and balance for our collective future and for all living beings.

This statement is written in black and white with a foreign language that is not our own and does not convey the full depth of our concerns.

The Creator created the People of the Earth into the Land at the beginning of Creation and gave us a way of life. This way of life has been passed down generation-to-generation since the beginning. We have not honored this way of life through our own actions and we must live these original instructions in order to restore universal balance and harmony. We are a part of Creation; thus, if we break the Laws of Creation, we destroy ourselves.

We, the Original Caretakers of Mother Earth, have no choice but to follow and uphold the Original Instructions, which sustain the continuity of Life. We recognize our umbilical connection to Mother Earth and understand that she is the source of life, not a resource to be exploited. We speak on behalf of all Creation today, to communicate an urgent message that man has gone too far, placing us in the state of survival. We warned that one day you would not be able to control what you have created. That day is here. Not heeding warnings from both Nature and the People of the Earth keeps us on the path of self destruction. This self destructive path has led to the Fukushima nuclear crisis, Gulf oil spill, tar sands devastation, pipeline failures, impacts of carbon dioxide emissions and the destruction of ground water through hydraulic fracking, just to name a few. In addition, these activities and development continue to cause the deterioration and destruction of sacred places and sacred waters that are vital for Life.

Powerful technologies are out of control and are threatening the future of all life. The Fukushima nuclear crisis alone is a threat to the future of humanity. Yet, our concern goes far beyond this single threat. Our concern is with the cumulative and compounding devastation that is being wrought by the actions of human beings around the world. It is the combination of resource extraction, genetically modified organisms, moral failures, pollution, introduction of invasive species and much much more that are threatening the future of life on Earth. The compounding of bad decisions and their corresponding actions are extremely shortsighted. They do not consider the future generations and they do not respect or honor the Creator's Natural Law. We strongly urge for the governmental authorities to respond with an open invitation to work and consult with us to solve the world's problems, without war. We must stop waging war against Mother Earth, and ourselves…

We are the People of the Earth united under the Creator's Law with a sacred covenant to protect and a responsibility to extend Life for all future generations. We are expressing deep concern for our shared future and urge everyone to awaken spiritually. We must work in unity to help Mother Earth heal so that she can bring back balance and harmony for all her children."

At the same time as these destructive events, incredible movements are rising up around the world. People are realising that they are not inferior to business and political leaders and are taking on greater leadership for themselves representing the truth of what our planet and community requires. I see a very wonderful thing happening all over the world - people like you and me are no longer seeking a sanctuary outside the madness that the Western countries have become. Many of us are now feeling the energy rising, the Mother waking up in us and we are returning to the baby, the wayward child and seeking to right the wrongs in the world. Marianne Williamson, an important and very well known spiritual teacher from the US, a regular on Oprah, has announced she is running for the House of Representatives in California. Her running slogan is "Politics shouldn't be the least heart-filled thing we do. It should be the most heart-filled thing we do. It should be a collective expression of our most enlightened selves." We will see very quickly who out of the existing politicians is true hearted by their reaction to Marianne's campaign.

Famous actors and personalities are becoming more bold and forthright in their condemnation of corporate greed and governmental misdemeanors, most notably British comedian Russell Brand who is now guest editor for the UK political magazine The New Statesman who laid it all out in a recent televised interview with political journalist Jeremy Paxman. These are not Hollywood publicity stunts or fads or sticking within allowable limits from corporate sponsors. They are people with insight expressing the truth with clarity.

But even more heartening than this I am witnessing many friends and associates across Australia and the world stand up and find their voice, questioning local government decisions and standing against them. I see signs against CSG (Coal Seam Gas) on entering many towns.

People are sharing great information through social media and having their voices heard. It's as if we are collectively realising that the Emperor is naked and having the courage to express it. Politics in its purist sense is the most spiritual domain - it is where the people are and there is no higher call than serving them. Many of us have avoided politics like the plague for what it has become but now we are reclaiming our voice.

Our spiritual practice needs to be a sanctuary that empowers us to do our work in service to humanity and the world, rather than a temporary retreat from it before returning to aid and abet the current Western economic death machine. The work we are required to do right now is to pull down the walls of economic and social separation and rebuild a community-centred society, not as a corporate slogan but for real.
