The Sun in Libra is in the third Grand Cross in three months, in opposition to the ongoing Uranus/Medusa conjunction in Aries, while squaring Pluto and the Black Moon in the opposite signs of Capricorn and Cancer. The rather urbane and civilised energies of Libra are in for some serious confrontations with a number of "take no prisoners" energies that are far from civilised or fair and moral towards the needs, wants and desires of our egos.
The Uranus/Medusa conjunction is the highest archetype in the midnight sky, an absolute wild card in Aries and potentially a highly combustible combination. This conjunction fascinates me, as the prospect of waking up Medusa, which Uranus tends to do to whatever he touches, is simultaneously a frightening idea and, if you understand the extraordinary qualities of this Gorgon underneath her enraged face, an exciting one.
Medusa in most of us is usually a deeply suppressed part of the feminine, one that haunts and undermines from the dark recesses away from conscious awareness. She leaks out as often uncharacteristically cruel and vicious outburst in times of great stress. As a carrier of ancient traumas and rage, there are valid reasons for keeping her at bay. But any great power disowned is going to turn destructive and vengeful, mainly towards ourself but occasionally at some other poor mortal who may or may not deserve a full serving of her wrath.
The Uranian urge to liberate will necessarily involve blowing the top off this psychic volcano, which will not be pretty and ideally done in a safe, private place. Underneath, though, lies an exceptional sacred warrior, sorceress and tantric goddess with great Shakti, an all-accepting love and crystal clear boundaries. This is also a magical combination, linking the earth magic of the sacred feminine with the Merlin-like qualities of Uranus.
There is a wild joy inherent here, as the sacred primal feminine offers a release of pure, dynamic, passionate individuality within each of us, deeply committed to living from the absolute truth of who we are.
Emotionally, this is an expressive month in general as the Moon starts it in Leo, conjuncting the warriors Mars and Pallas Athena. Despite the chaos and the deeper transformative urges of the Uranus/Pluto square, there's still a lot of get up and go energy around for getting things done. The Moon sends good aspects to the Uranus/Medusa conjunction, enhancing the fiery energies of both positions.
Relationships once again are in for a bumpy time but with the prospect of burning through emotional defences and the inhibiting effect of unhealed anger. Libra is such a relationship-oriented energy, one challenged by the individualistic urges of Aries and the determination of both Pluto and the Black Moon to bore through superficial levels of relating. A square between Mars in Leo and Venus in Scorpio is also traditionally a rather combative bond between two potent parts of self with equal passion expressed in very different ways.
Venus is in an unusual, somewhat contradictory but mythologically significant, position, conjuncting both Persephone and Psyche in Scorpio. The goddess of love is extended, stretched even, between upward and downward gravities - Psyche calling her towards more exalted, refined, soul to soul bonding while Persephone draws her into the underworld for purification and psycho-sexual empowerment.
This is also a re-enactment of part of the myth of Eros and Psyche, where Aphrodite, playing bitchy future mother-in-law, demands that the beautiful and ethereal Psyche descends into the underworld on a task that would normally kill anybody, before she can be re-united with her beloved Eros. By this stage, Psyche has reached a point of absolute surrender in the name of love and, by doing so, earns the respect of all the gods, including Aphrodite and is eventually successful.
On a more human level, this means that our relationships are pushing us, and being pushed, towards letting go of old patterning and for clearing shadows off our hearts as we develop our capacity for unconditional love.
Understood fully, the goals of both Persephone and Psyche are the same but through different and complementary pathways towards the experience of the greater love within oneself and with the beloved.
Saturn continues to travel close with the North Node and both are joined by Mercury in the first weeks of the month, who simultaneously sends out great aspects to Neptune, Chiron, Pluto, Vesta and eventually Jupiter. With the Node acting as a lighthouse for our future soul dreaming, Mercury, teaming with it along with Saturn, represents a gathering of all the learning during these last two years to piece together a composite picture of where we are heading. It is also a gathering of our own inner authority and piercing commitment to the manifestation of this vision.
In support of this, the Sun lines up with the Shiva asteroid in Libra. As an image of the sacred masculine, he rejoices in the re-awakening of the primal goddesses, while supporting us to be able to hold a deep, grounded centre within that can weather the fiercest of psychic storms.
